REMARKS
Surgeon fish derive their name from the scalpel-like spine on each side of their tail base, which is sometimes used as a defensive weapon during territorial disputes.
These fish can either be solitary or form schools. Most surgeonfish graze on benthic algae however there are a number of species like the unicorn fish which feed on zooplankton.
Surgeonfish show a great range of disestive systems. Some have thick-walled, gizzard-like stomachs, while others use chemicals such as acids to aid in the breakdown of algae.

How Do Fish Communicate
The colour of fish is one of the main forms of communication. With most fish lacking any form of vocalisation, the only way to communicate is by sight. This is very important at breeding time and camouflage is another aspect which makes them less vulnerable to predators and also helps them blend into the corals.
